Black Youth Continue to Face Systemic Barriers in Academic Achievement
Black students in Ontario are more likely to be disciplined, streamed into lower academic tracks, and face barriers that contribute to lower rates of high-school completion compared to their peers. For example, government reviews and human rights reports show that systemic bias within school environments continues to disproportionately affect Black youth, limiting equitable access to advanced academic opportunities.
Lack of Consistent, Culturally Responsive Mentorship Limits Youth Potential
Youth who do not have access to culturally meaningful mentorship are less likely to stay engaged in school, explore career pathways, or build resilience. Research on mentorship demonstrates that quality mentorship is linked to reductions in dropout rates and improvements in school attendance and engagement for racialized students.
Unequal Access to Career Pathways Leaves Youth Unprepared for the Workforce
Black and underserved youth often experience higher unemployment and lower access to career guidance due to systemic barriers and limited connections to professional networks. National and community research highlights that marginalized youth face significant gaps in access to employment preparation, leading to disparities in early career outcomes.
Hands-On, Skill-Based Learning Opportunities Remain Inaccessible to Many Youth
Experiential learning opportunities, such as skill-building focused on creative media or technology, are often unavailable or cost-prohibitive for underserved communities. Studies show that access to creative and technical training increases confidence and employment readiness, but many youth lack accessible programs to support these outcomes.
Short-Term Interventions Fail to Address Long-Term Youth Needs
Short or one-off youth programs can deliver temporary benefits but lack the continuity required to effect sustainable change in academic performance, self-confidence, and career preparedness. Evidence suggests that consistent, relationship-based support is more effective at improving long-term outcomes for at-risk youth.
